Find out how you can try to restore your shrunk wool garment.
What you need to get started
To restore shrunk wool, use lukewarm water and a softening agent such as baby shampoo or a mild conditioner. These products help relax the fabric’s fibers, making it easier to reshape them.
Preparation: Creating the right mix
Fill a bucket with lukewarm water: < 2 > Make sure the water is not too hot, as heat can worsen shrinkage.
Add a softener: Mix about two tablespoons of baby shampoo or conditioner into the water. This helps loosen the tight wool fibers.
Soak the garment: Place the shrunk garment in the water and gently massage the solution into the fabric. This makes the fibers more supple and pliable.
Preparation for drying after soaking
Remove carefully: Slowly lift the garment out of the water and gently squeeze out the excess water without twisting or wringing it. Do not rinse out the shampoo; it helps keep the fibers supple while drying.
Removing moisture: Lay a towel flat, spread the garment out on it, and roll up the towel together with the garment. Press gently to squeeze out most of the water.
Restoring the shape
Place on a dry surface: Lay the damp garment on a clean, dry towel.
Stretch to the desired size: Gently pull the fabric to restore the garment to its original shape and dimensions. Work evenly to prevent it from losing its shape.
Air drying: Allow the garment to air dry completely while lying flat. Avoid direct sunlight or heat sources that could damage the wool.
Repetition and maintenance
If the garment is not yet the right size after the first attempt, you can repeat the process. However, make sure not to pull too hard on the fabric, as this can damage the fibers. To prevent the problem from recurring, always wash wool garments according to the label instructions and avoid exposure to high temperatures. Use only Special wool detergent (absolutely not regular detergent!!). Do not use fabric softener, and never let it dry in a tumble dryer or on a radiator!
Please bear in mind that wool is a delicate fabric, and successful restoration cannot be guaranteed. However, with the right techniques, you can often achieve an improvement.
Is your wool garment beyond repair?
Then, at least you’ve done everything you could. Unfortunately, wool sometimes shrinks or felts permanently.
