Why do I get moths in my woollen clothing?

Why do I get moths in my woollen clothing? You can read all about it in this article.

Moths love to lay their eggs in dark, undisturbed places—such as your wardrobe. They thrive at temperatures of around 24°C and humidity levels near 75%. Breeding can be halted if the room temperature drops below 15°C or rises above 30°C. Incidentally, it is not the adult moths that eat holes in clothing, but the larvae of the clothes moth. A single moth can lay between 50 and 90 eggs within four weeks.

The wingspan of the moth is approximately 10 to 15 mm; the moth is light brown in color, and the small caterpillars are whitish with a brown ead and measure 7–9 mm in length.

Clothes moths love to feast on animal-based textiles such as wool, cashmere, mohair, feathers, fur, or silk. However, they are just as happy to feed on linen and cotton.

But how do we prevent a moth infestation?

Always wash garments before hanging them back in the wardrobe; do not hang back clothes you have worn briefly. Always launder seasonal clothing you are not currently wearing and hang it up clean.

Moths dislike scents such as lavender, cedarwood, or walnut leaves. You can obtain these in the form of essential oils, cedarwood chips, or scented sachets. You can also hang bars of soap among your clothes; moths do not care for those either.

Air out your wardrobe regularly; throw the doors wide open and let the light in, since moths detest well-lit areas.

Install a screen in your window so that moths cannot fly inside as easily.
