How do you wash wool-felt slippers?
Gentle care for lasting warmth and comfort
Wool-felt slippers are wonderfully warm, breathable, and durable—a sign of true quality. But how do you keep them looking good, feeling soft, and smelling fresh without compromising the natural properties of the wool? In this blog, you’ll learn exactly how to wash and care for your wool-felt slippers properly, step by step.
Why wool is so special
Wool is a natural, self-cleaning material. This means it largely breaks down dirt and odors on its own. It is breathable, regulates temperature, and stays fresh for a long time—even with daily use.
As a result, you need to wash wool-felt slippers much less frequently than, for example, cotton or synthetic ones. Often, airing them out is enough!
1. Freshen up wool-felt slippers without washing
The easiest way to keep your slippers clean is to air them out regularly.
- Put them outside in the fresh air for an hour (preferably in the shade).
- Avoid direct sunlight, as it can cause the wool to shrink or harden.
- You could also hang them in a steamy bathroom after a shower—the steam refreshes the wool.
Tip: Wool “restores” itself thanks to the natural oils in the fiber (lanolin). Often, your slippers will be as good as new after airing out overnight.
2. When washing is necessary after all
Sometimes, a small stain or odor can still develop—for instance, from bare feet or spills. In that case, wash your wool-felt slippers by hand or in the washing machine.
Here’s how you do it:
Fill a basin with lukewarm water (max. 30°C) or wash them in the machine using a special wool cycle at a maximum of 30°C.
Add a small amount of mild wool detergent without enzymes or perfume.
For hand washing: Briefly submerge the slippers and gently move them back and forth (do not wring or rub!).
Rinse them with clean, lukewarm water.
Gently press out the excess water — do not twist or wring.
3. Dry with care
Let your slippers air-dry at room temperature.
- Do not tumble dry.
- Do not place on the radiator or in direct sunlight.
- Lay them flat on a towel and reshape them if necessary.
Tip: Stuff some paper towels or newspaper into your slippers while they dry. That helps keep them in good shape.
4. Extra care after drying
Have they become a bit fuzzy or stiff after drying?
Then use a soft suede brush to lightly brush up the surface. This makes the wool fluffy and comfortable again.
What you’re better off not doing
To keep your wool-felt slippers looking good, avoid the following:
❌ Using the washing machine or dryer.
❌ Adding fabric softener or bleach.
❌ Rubbing or wringing when washing.
❌ Drying in direct sunlight or on the heater.
These can cause the wool to felt or shrink – and that would be a shame for your beautiful slippers.
Finally
With a little care, your wool-felt slippers will stay warm, soft, and shapely for years. Wool is a living material—the more gently you treat it, the longer it lasts.
Liebo tip: Airing them out is better than washing. Treat your slippers with love, and they will remain your faithful companions on cold days.
