What is Pressure Ulcer (Decubitus)?
If you are required to spend long periods lying down or sitting—such as in a wheelchair—you may develop pressure ulcers (also
known as decubitus). These are injuries to the skin and underlying tissue caused by prolonged pressure on the skin. When you’re unable to change position frequently, the same area of skin remains compressed for too long. This pressure restricts blood flow in the small vessels, causing damage to the skin and the tissue beneath it.
A medical sheepskin can help prevent these pressure sores.
How Does a Medical Sheepskin Help Prevent Pressure Ulcers?
Medical sheepskins are a scientifically proven aid in the prevention of pressure ulcers. The fleece is dense and short, which helps to evenly distribute body weight. This means that pressure isn’t concentrated on specific points such as the shoulder blades or tailbone. As a result, areas that would normally be under high pressure are less burdened. In this way, a medical sheepskin helps prevent pressure sores from developing.
Sheepskin is breathable. Thanks to its natural ventilation, it stays pleasantly warm in winter and comfortably cool in summer.
The main difference between a regular sheepskin and a medical sheepskin lies in the length of the wool and the denser, more structured fleece of the medical version.
Washing Instructions for Medical Sheepskins
Unlike regular sheepskins, medical sheepskins can be washed. These short-wool sheepskins are specially tanned to allow for cleaning. Wash the fleece on a wool cycle and let it air dry—do not place it in direct sunlight or on a heater. Stretch the leather every few hours while drying to prevent it from becoming stiff and hard. Do not use a tumble dryer!
We offer special wool detergents formulated specifically for medical sheepskins.
