Why do my socks wear out so quickly?
OverviewWhy do my wool socks break so quickly?
Wool socks are wonderfully warm, especially in the cold winter weather. We have many customers who buy new wool socks season after season and are very enthusiastic about them.
However, sometimes we get a complaint that the wool socks break so quickly. How come?
This can have several causes:
Coarse heels/calluses which cause more chafing.
This is easy to prevent by using a special foot cream, such as the Saicara foot repair cream. This will quickly give you smooth, soft heels. And you can keep them soft by applying Saicara foot balm to them daily.
Wearing shoes that are too tight or too loose.
It sounds contradictory, but both shoes that are too tight and/or too loose cause sock problems. Shoes that are too tight cause tension on your socks, and if you walk on them every day, they will wear out extra fast.
Shoes that are too loose cause a lot of friction, your socks will rub back and forth through your shoes, which will also cause them to wear out extra fast. The best shoes are those that give your toes enough room, but that do not allow you to slide around in the shoe.
Toenails that are too long
Having toenails that are too long is disastrous for wool socks. Your toenails rub against the wool fibers from the inside, causing them to break. Make sure you clip your toenails regularly, and also clip the edges well, and file down any sharp edges if necessary.
Walking in your socks.
What many people do is kick off their shoes after a long day at work and continue walking in your socks. Your socks are not shoes and not slippers. If you regularly walk in socks at home, they will also wear out faster, especially on carpeting they wear out extra fast.
Moths
You may not wear wool socks in the summer, they will remain in the closet until winter time has arrived. Even if you have only worn your socks for a short while, never put them back in your sock drawer or closet unwashed, this also applies to all types of clothing. Moths love residual odors and like to lay their eggs there. The larvae love this and eat your socks and clothing, they also love dark
places.
Always wash your socks and clothing before putting them in your closet or hanging them up, even if you have only worn them for a short while, also regularly leave your closet doors wide open, moths hate light.
Mothballs also help, but they give off a very penetrating smell. An alternative is cedar wood. Various articles made of cedar wood against moths can be found on the internet.
Washing your socks too hot and drying them in the dryer
It is best to wash wool socks in the washing machine on a special wool wash program at a maximum of 30 degrees and wool should definitely not be put in the dryer. For other types of socks, do not wash them too hot and preferably not in the dryer, fibers wear out much faster due to the heat.
It remains difficult to identify the cause directly.
Some people walk more in a day than others, a combination of the causes mentioned.
Wool is nice and warm and soft and does not cause sweaty feet but is also more vulnerable than polyester socks.
Perhaps a solution could be socks made of wool, but with a lower percentage of wool.
The more wool, the more wear you get.
